Extremist ideologies pose an evolving threat to global security and social stability. From far-right nationalism and religious fundamentalism to misogyny and accelerationist ideologies, extremist movements continually adapt to recruit, radicalise, and mobilise followers. Social media, both mainstream and fringe, amplifies these narratives, deepening divisions and normalising hatred and violence. Though often incubated online, the consequences are frequently felt offline. CIR has long analysed extremist ideologies, groups, and tactics. With their influence growing, both online and offline, deeper research and wider collaboration are increasingly vital.

Launched in December 2023, Spotlight on Extremism publishes research and analysis on extremist groups, ideologies, and networks. The series investigates how these movements recruit, radicalise, and mobilise supporters, and how their narratives spread online and translate into real-world impact. Drawing on CIR’s expertise in open-source intelligence (OSINT), the Spotlight examines extremist tactics, tools, and potential links to hostile state actors. It also features findings from CIR’s Witness projects, providing insight into contemporary events and the broader influence of extremist movements worldwide.

Methodology

At CIR we continuously develop techniques and tools to identify and understand extremist ideologies and networks. By using both qualitative and quantitative tools, we analyse patterns, map influence networks, and work in collaboration with experts in the field to better understand the root causes.
