Since the invasion began, maritime grain exports had all but ceased. Given the global food crises, the UN and Turkey brokered a deal in which Ukraine could export grain through the Bosphorus Strait. Ukrainian officials hoped the deal would allow them to export three million tonnes of grain a month. The UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres called it "a beacon of hope". Less than a day later, Russian forces struck the Odesa sea trade port with a Kalibr missile. However, the deal has remained in tact and was extended by another 120 days on 17 November 2022.
