This map shows reported scam compounds in Myanmar, where individuals are allegedly tasked with carrying out cyber scams and online fraud. Myanmar Witness has collected and geographically mapped claims of such activity, as these centres are frequently associated with reports of human trafficking and economic coercion of individuals, both domestic and international, forced into work at these sites. As such, it falls within Myanmar Witness’s purview to contextualise potential human rights abuses that may occur within these sites.
While these scam compounds take different forms and continue to evolve in response to increased scrutiny, they still continue to proliferate mostly in the border regions of Myanmar at the time of this map’s publication.
The map presents a subset of scam compounds verified by Myanmar Witness as at least “likely” to be scam sites, based on the project’s methodology. Other reported sites are under going review and monitoring.
