Deaths, displacement, and destruction in Gezira state

In October 2024, CIR’s Sudan Witness team verified footage relating to civilian deaths, forced displacement, and destroyed infrastructure in three settlements in Gezira, after the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) launched a major assault on the state. The United Nations (UN) reported that the RSF shot at civilians and subjected them to violence and humiliation between 20 and 25 October, leading to “scores” of casualties.

Khartoum’s NTC tower up in flames

On 20 July, a pro-Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) Telegram channel posted a video showing a skyscraper on fire. The post stated that the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) bombed the National Telecommunication Corporation (NTC) tower in Sudan’s capital city Khartoum. However, the SAF’s claim that the RSF was responsible for the damage has been contested. Sudan Witness verified the footage (figure 1), which showed an active fire and smoke plumes coming from the tower and was filmed from a moving vehicle on Manshiya Bridge. Analysis of Planet and Sentinel satellite imagery shows a smoke plume coming from the NTC Tower on 20 July.

Fuel and fire: Repeated fires at Khartoum Oil Refinery pose risk to energy supplies

On 21 January 2024, a pro-SAF journalist with 48,700 followers posted a video to X showing large fuel tanks on fire, with fire engines and men in blue uniforms in the foreground of the video. Sudan Witness geolocated the footage to the Khartoum Oil Refinery (also known as Al Jili Oil Refinery), approximately 80km north of Khartoum (figure 2).
